Unit 03: Grammar- Past Perfect Tense

 

 

Examples:

•      I revised the lesson. I took the exam

•      I worked all day. I was tired

•      Ahmed watched the movie. He went to bed.

 

 

1. I had revised the lesson before I took the exam
2. I was tired because I had worked all day.
3. After Ahmed had watched the movie, he went to bed

  

 

·      By the time Alex finished his studies, he had been in London for eight years.

 

I - Form:

I had revised the lesson before I took the exam.	Nadia had not done her exercises before she came to class.	Had you sold the house before you moved out?

 

II - Use:

• USE 1: Completed Action Before Something in the Past

Example: After Ahmed had watched the movie, he went to bed.

 

•  USE 2: Duration Before Something in the Past

Example: By the time Alex finished his studies, he had been in London for eight years.

 

• Time expressions used with past perfect

Never – when – already – by the time – just – before - after

1. My brother had gone to school before I woke up.‎
2. After I had revised my lessons, I watched a film. 
3. I had never seen such a film before.
4. Maryam had just left her home when the car hit her.
5. By the time Ali finished his studies, he had been in Rabat for eight years.
6.  He had already eaten when I got home.
