Unit 3: Functions- Expressing Purpose.

 

 

Examine this sentence:

  • Salma went to the shop. She wanted to buy some goods.
  • Salma went to the shop to buy some goods.

 We can say the same thing in different ways

  • Salma went to the shop to buy some sugar.
  • Salma went to the shop in order to buy some sugar.
  • Salma went to the shop so as to buy some sugar.

Form:

to                         

in order to          +        infinitive

so as to

  • Affirmative

1.    Leila jumped in the river to rescue the drowning child.

2.    Mike exercises regularly in order to lose weight.

3.    Julian is moving to Paris so as to look for a better job.

  • Negative

In the negative form, we place "not" before "to “.

 

1.    He opened the door slowly so as not to wake his parents.

2.    He took a taxi in order not to be late for school.

3.    He is reading silently so as not to disturb the other students.

 

Other forms of expressing purpose:

Examples:

  • Salma went to the shop to buy some sugar.
  • Salma went to the shop so she could buy some sugar.
  • Salma went to the shop so that she could buy some sugar.
  • Salma went to the shop in order that she could buy some sugar.

1.    She took a taxi so she could arrive on time.

2.    He got a visa so that he can travel to the USA.

3.    He turned down the music in order that he would not disturb the neighbours.
