A Guide to Writing Informal Letters

Informal letters, also known as personal letters, are used for communication between friends, family, or anyone with whom you have a non-professional relationship. Here’s a guide on how to write an informal letter.

Layout of an Informal Letter

  1. Sender’s Address: Start with your address at the top right-hand corner of the page. Although this is optional in informal letters, it’s useful if the recipient wants to reply.

  2. Date: Write the date below the sender’s address.

  3. Salutation/Greeting: Start your letter with a greeting. It could be “Dear [Recipient’s Name]” or any other friendly greeting.

  4. Body of the Letter: This is the main part of your letter. It’s where you communicate your message. The body of an informal letter is flexible; you can write as many paragraphs as you need to communicate your message.

  5. Closing: End your letter with a closing statement. Examples include “Best regards”, “Yours sincerely”, or “Love”. The closing depends on your relationship with the recipient.

  6. Signature: After the closing statement, sign your name. You can also print your name underneath your signature.

Tips for Writing an Informal Letter

  • Use a Friendly Tone: Since the letter is to someone you share a personal relationship with, it’s appropriate to use a friendly and warm tone.

  • Be Conversational: Write as if you’re speaking to the person directly. Feel free to use contractions, idioms, and colloquialisms.

  • Keep it Personal: Share personal stories, thoughts, and feelings. That’s what makes it an informal letter!

  • Proofread: Always check for spelling and grammar errors before sending your letter.

Remember, the goal of an informal letter is to communicate in a personal and friendly way. Happy writing!

I’ll be coming to Agdz for the wedding of my cousin. We have to meet up then. Do write back soon. I’m waiting for your reply.

Take care,

Love,
