Prefixes are a type of affix that is added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning or create a new word. Here are some common prefixes and their meanings:
- anti-: against or opposite Example: anti-inflammatory
dis-: not, opposite, or reverse Example: disagree
en-/em-: to cause to become or to put into Example: empower
ex-/e-: out of, from, or former Example: ex-boyfriend
il-/im-/in-/ir-: not, without, or opposite Example: impossible
inter-: between or among Example: interact
mis-: wrong or bad Example: misunderstand
non-: not or opposite of Example: non-fiction
pre-: before Example: preview
re-: again or back Example: rewrite
sub-: under, below, or less than Example: submarine
un-: not or reverse Example: unable
